The Muscular Dystrophy Association announced that Jerry Lewis will no longer serve as their national chairman and will no longer appear on the Labor Day telethon. The 85-year-old has held the post since the early 1950s and has hosted the famous fund raising telethon since 1966. During his 44 years at the helm, he has raised more than $1 billion for the non-profit agency. Lewis announced in May that he would no long appear as host but planned to make a television appearance during the 2011 telecast. That has apparently changed. MDA Chairman of the Board R. Rodney Howell issed this statement: “Lewis is a world-class humanitarian and we’re forever grateful to him for his more than half century of generous service to MDA. He will not be appearing on the telethon.” The comedian lives in Las Vegas and has battled several health issues.
