Jeret Peterson Suicide: Olympic Skier Shot Himself

Jeret Peterson 1981-2011 Jeret “Speedy” Peterson, three-time Olympian who won a silver medal at the 2010 Winter Games in Vancouver, was found dead in Lambs Canyon, Utah on July 25, 2011. The cause of death was determined to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to the Unified Police Department of Greater Salt Lake, who responded to the 911 call from Peterson. The 29-year-old, who has battled alcoholism and depression all of his adult life, told the emergency dispatcher that he was going to take his own life.� Responding officers found him deceased at 9:30 p.m. and discovered a suicide note in his car. Peterson got the name “Speedy” at a summer ski camp in Lake Placid, New York in the mid-90′s because his coaches thought he looked like “Speed Racer,” the cartoon character. The athlete has seen his share of tragedy and sorrow.� He was sexually abused as a child, his sister was killed by a drunk driver in 1987 and a close friend committed suicide in front of Peterson in 2005, by shooting himself in the head. The former Olympian was arrested in Hailey, Idaho early Friday, July 22, 2011 on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol.� [...]
