While I was watching "America's Got Talent" last night, a hopeful contestant vying for a ticket to Las Vegas stopped me cold in my tracks. It's not because the aspiring comedian's "talent" -- fairly entertaining impersonations of Freddy Kruger and Al Pacino -- was hilarious, or by any means worthy of the $1 million prize. It's because of the terribly unfunny thing judge Howie Mandel said in response to the contestant, a 52-year-old Asian man named Mark Ofuji.
By way of backstory, Ofuji describes himself as a "massage therapist" and comedian, telling the cameras before his audition, "When I do impersonations of celebrities, people are amazed." His stand-up routine was kind of crazy and rambling, and instantly received two Xs from judges Howard Stern and Sharon Osbourne. But Mandel, a comedian himself, was intrigued.
"It was Al Pacino. It was uncanny, because it was amazing," Mandel said, while the other judges deliberated. "They don't know Al Pacino."
He then asked: "Do you make a living as a comedian? What do you do?"
"I do massage," Ofuji answered in heavily accented English, not without a self-aware grin.
At this point, the crowd burst into laughter, and Mandel, sensing an easy opportunity, said: "Can I tell you something that you'll understand? I don't think this particular spot is going to have a happy ending."
Say what? The more I thought about this, the more offended I got on Ofuji's behalf -- because he is a man, because he is middle-aged, because he is of Asian descent and makes an honest living and was still forced to swallow Mandel's patronizing and outrageously outdated, offensive remark. The episode originally ran earlier in the week, on June 18, but when I Googled Ofuji's name, I found hardly a mention of Mandel's off-color remark, which made me wonder if I was alone in finding Mandel's comment racist.
What do you think, readers? Watch the above clip (Mandel's comment is around 2:20) and sound off in the comments below.

If you haven't been on Twitter much yesterday or today, you may have been unaware of the "Girls" marathon -- or rather, #Girlsathon -- that HBO aired today.
At 3pm Eastern, the cable network reran all 10 episodes of the show's first season. The series, which Lena Dunham, previously of "Tiny Furniture" fame, wrote, directed, produced with Jenni Konner and Judd Apatow, and starred in with Allison Williams, Jemima Kirke and Zosia Mamet, follows four women living in New York City in their early 20s as they navigate their love lives, friendships and fledgling careers, making a lot of #mistakesgirlsmake along the way.
Dunham live-tweeted the Girlsathon, and fans on Twitter chimed in with commentary throughout. Check out some of their best tweets below, and if you missed today's marathon, never fear -- as @GirlsHBO has reminded "Girls" fans on Twitter throughout the day, the marathon airs again on HBO Zone at 8pm and 1 am Eastern.

Any election season requires a healthy dosage of comedy to help navigate the tricky waters of BS and spin. Luckily, with roughly six thousand late night talk shows currently on the air, it's not hard to find sharp jokes tackling the day's issues.
We've begun rounding up the best monologue jokes about the week's issues from the likes of political satirists like Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert and Bill Maher, as well as more traditional talk show hosts like Conan O'Brien and Jimmy Fallon. This week, they address Obama's announcement that the government will no longer deport young undocumented immigrants, the Michigan "vagina" debacle, and the announcement that John Kerry will play Mitt Romney in Obama's prep debates.

Bethenny Frankel was on the subject of dating when "Dancing With The Stars" pro Maksim Chmerkovskiy stopped by her show "Bethenny" Friday. She asked the dancing pro what he looks for in a lady, and Maks said he appreciates when a lady makes the first move to strike up a conversation. Apparently, the reality TV hunk is too shy to make the first move.
"I respect that, if somebody comes over to me and starts the conversation. I would never come up, because I'm shy, I'm like trembling inside."
Bethenny took the opportunity to question Maksim about his rumored romance with fellow "DWTS" cast mate, Peta Murgatroyd. The two have been photographed getting close in the tabloids lately, but Maks played coy when Bethenny asked him to confirm if they were dating. He did drop one big hint, though.
"But she came up first," he said. It took Bethenny a few seconds to realize what he meant, but eventually she got the message.

There's a texting epidemic in this country: we're texting while driving, while crossing the street, while getting married... It's all very dangerous, and Bill Maher knows this. So how do you play fair when everyone is guilty of doing the same thing?
Fortunately, Maher has a new rule that speaks to this very problem. If you've ever nearly been hit by a car because you were looking at your phone, this one's for you.

Bad news for "Mad Men" fans who thought they were watching a five-season documentary -- Don Draper is not a real person. We know, we know -- your mind has been blown.
On June 8, Tom Scocca's Slate article, "Don Draper's Shocking Secret: He Doesn't Exist," blew the lid off that secret for good, and managed to anger some of the show's fans.
Twitter user Eric Thurm called the article "one of the most condescending things" he'd ever read, while Dov Friedman, called it "aggressively awful."
In the article, Scocca explains that "Don Draper is a made-up person inside your television set. He is a pattern of lit-up dots moving in front of your eyes for one hour, on Sundays, during the season run of the Mad Men program, which mercifully ends this weekend."
Though viewers of the AMC drama are more than aware that Draper, his family and advertising company Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce are all born out of the mind of the show's creator Matt Weiner, Scocca is not convinced because of how often the show is referenced in the news. He says he is perplexed by how often other writers have chosen to use a pop culture reference to help explain a concept or event.
"What's wrong with 'Mad Men' isn't that it makes you boring. What's wrong with 'Mad Men' is that it also makes you stupid," he wrote, before listing an excerpt from a 2011 column in the business section of The New York Times:
As more and more women have come into the work force, corporate America has made significant, if agonizingly slow, progress in making sure its attitudes and the conduct of its leadership reflect those changes. It's no longer a ''Mad Men'' world where women are expected to fetch coffee and whiskey and service their bosses in other ways.
Much to Scocca's chagrin, "Mad Men" has become synonymous with the '60s and Don Draper its foremost figure -- but what he's really angry about his the fact that fans and writers won't shut up about it.
After listing five articles that reference the show he explains:
"What's remarkable -- almost miraculous -- about these 'Mad Men' references is how universally, completely meaningless they are. I belong to the 99 percent of the American public that does not watch 'Mad Men,' yet there's nothing about the Don Draper comparisons that is lost on me."
It's true "Mad Men" is not the country's most watched program -- that title belongs to NBC's Sunday Night Football, which averaged 20.7 million viewers each game this season. But no one seemed to explain to Scocca that a football analogy doesn't quite work when writing about slow changes to the sexist attitudes in corporate America.

Amber Portwood may be headed to prison to serve a 5-year sentence, but that doesn't mean she'll be sitting idly by, counting down the days to freedom. In a "Good Morning America" behind bars interview with Portwood, the "Teen Mom" explains that she hopes to use her incarceration as time to better her life.
"I'm not just going to sit," Portwood said. "I'm going to do substance abuse classes. I'm going to get my GED."
Just last week, the 22-year-old told a judge that she would rather head to prison than complete her court-ordered substance abuse program.
"I felt like I'd rather do my time and get it over with," Portwood explained of her decision to accept a prison sentence.
The MTV star's decision to face the consequences of her actions comes after several years of repeated lows for the young mom. In 2010 she was charged with domestic abuse after MTV film crews captured Portwood repeatedly hitting ex-fiance, Gary Shirley. Portwood was then placed on probation, which she later violated with illegal prescription drug possession charges.
Things got even worse in June 2011, when Portwood was hospitalized after attempting to commit suicide. But that wouldn't be her last attempt. Portwood told "GMA" that she tried to take her own life once again.
"I was very depressed, overwhelmed, bitter at everybody and I didn't feel like that was the life I wanted to live," Portwood said of the suicide attempt.
Portwood told "GMA" that she took roughly 30 Suboxene -- a drug used to treat opioid addiction -- over the course of three days.
"The depression took over," she said. "I'd just take four to five at a time underneath my tongue, and nod out. I had more than addiction problems. I had, you know, mental problems, too."
But Portwood is confident that her 5-year prison sentence will allow her the time to get the help she needs.
